Common Restroom Trailer Problems & How to Fix Them

A crew foreman outside Show Low called us on a Friday afternoon, half-panicked. The restroom trailer at his job site had lost water pressure the day before a safety inspection, and no one on-site knew whether it was a tank issue, a pump issue, or something worse. Turned out to be a kinked supply line — a five-minute fix once someone knew where to look.

Most restroom trailer problems are like that: small, common, and easy to solve quickly if you know what’s actually going wrong. The trouble is that most renters have never operated one before, so that a minor issue can feel like a major one. Here’s what actually comes up most, and how to handle it.

Low or No Water Pressure

This is the most common call we get, and it’s rarely the trailer itself.

Usual causes:

  • A kinked or pinched water supply hose
  • An empty or low fresh water tank (if not connected to a direct hookup)
  • A closed or partially closed shut-off valve
  • Debris or air trapped in the line after setup

How to fix it:

  • Walk the hose from the trailer to the water source and straighten any kinks
  • Check the tank gauge, if the unit is running on fresh water rather than a direct hookup
  • Confirm all shut-off valves are fully open, not just cracked
  • Run a faucet for 30 to 60 seconds to clear trapped air from the line

If pressure is still weak after that, it’s worth a call — it could be a pump issue that needs a technician, not guesswork.

Toilets Not Flushing Properly

A sluggish or weak flush usually isn’t a plumbing failure. It’s almost always one of three things.

Usual causes:

  • Low water pressure feeding the flush mechanism (see above)
  • A holding tank that’s nearing capacity, which backs up the system
  • Something non-flushable clogging the line — wipes, paper towels, feminine products

How to fix it:

  • Check the water pressure first, since it’s the most common root cause
  • Check the waste tank level gauge, if the unit has one, and schedule a pump-out if it’s getting full
  • Post a clear “flush toilet paper only” sign at each stall — this alone prevents most clogs
  • Never attempt to clear a suspected clog with tools or chemicals; call for service instead

Unpleasant Odors

Odor complaints usually mean something in the system’s balance is off, not that the unit is dirty.

Usual causes:

  • A waste tank close to capacity
  • Low or no deodorizing/holding tank chemical
  • Poor ventilation, especially in enclosed setups or hot weather
  • A vent stack that’s blocked or wasn’t installed correctly

How to fix it:

  • Confirm the holding tank isn’t overdue for a pump-out
  • Check that the trailer’s built-in ventilation fans are running, if it has them
  • On multi-day events, ask your rental company about a mid-event service visit
  • Avoid placing the trailer in a spot with no airflow, like against a wall or fence line

A well-maintained trailer on a proper service schedule shouldn’t smell noticeably different on day three than it did on day one.

Trailer Won’t Level Properly

An unlevel trailer isn’t just uncomfortable — it can affect how the plumbing and holding tanks drain.

Usual causes:

  • Uneven ground or a sloped driveway/lot
  • Stabilizing jacks not fully extended or not making solid contact
  • Setup was rushed and skipped the leveling step entirely

How to fix it:

  • Use a bubble level or level app to check the trailer’s floor at delivery
  • Adjust the jacks individually rather than assuming they’re all set the same
  • Use leveling blocks under jacks on soft or sloped ground
  • If the site is significantly sloped, flag this when booking so the right size and jack setup can be planned in advance

Doors Sticking or Not Latching

This is a small annoyance that’s almost always about setup, not the door hardware.

Usual causes:

  • The trailer isn’t fully leveled, which twists the frame slightly
  • Humidity or temperature swings causing minor material expansion
  • Hardware that’s simply loosened from transport and needs a quick tighten

How to fix it:

  • Re-check the trailer’s level first — this solves the majority of sticking-door complaints
  • Tighten visible hinge and latch hardware by hand
  • Avoid slamming doors, which loosens hardware faster over multi-day events

Power Issues (Lights, Fans, Climate Control)

Most power complaints trace back to the connection, not the trailer’s electrical system.

Usual causes:

  • Generator not properly connected or undersized for the trailer’s needs
  • A tripped breaker inside the trailer’s electrical panel
  • Extension cords that are too long or too thin for the load

How to fix it:

  • Confirm the generator or shore power connection matches the trailer’s requirements — this should be discussed at booking, not discovered on-site
  • Check the trailer’s breaker panel, usually located near the entrance, and reset any tripped breakers
  • Use properly rated cords if running power any distance from the source

When to Call for Service Instead of Troubleshooting

Most of the issues above are fixable in minutes without any special tools. A few situations are worth a call right away rather than attempting a fix on-site:

  • Visible leaking from tanks, fittings, or the trailer’s underside
  • A holding tank that’s full mid-event with no pump-out scheduled
  • Electrical issues beyond a simple breaker reset
  • Any structural issue — a door that won’t close, a step that’s come loose, a slide-out that won’t retract

Renting a trailer from a company that offers responsive service during your event is worth more than saving a few dollars on the rental itself, especially for multi-day bookings.

Prevent Problems Before They Start

Most restroom trailer issues trace back to setup, not equipment failure — which means most of them are avoidable with the right delivery and walkthrough.
